Matthew Helms
Actor and Team Leader

Foreword by Sensei Seifer:

I was fortunate and blessed to meet Matt Helms at the 2000 US Open, where I gave him one of the only two "10's" I've ever given a tournament competitor in almost 2 decades of judging.  In 2001 I offered Matt a Team Leader position on Team Imperial Dragon, which at that point was based out of Florida.  With his skills and  potential, Matt could have chosen any team he wished to represent.  I, as well as my students, were honored to have Matt on the Team.  At the 2001 US Open, the incarnation of the Florida team met up with Matt and he lead the other competitors through warm-ups and exercises to get them ready for competition.  At this point, I remember Matt looking up at me (he was a lot shorter when he was 11), and asking me to be his uke for his self defense competition.  I accepted, and Matt placed 3rd in the self defense category for 2001 (pics of Matt decimating me can be found by clicking here).  Since 2001 Matt has continued to compete frequently in Martial Arts Tournaments, often using his patriotic background and love for our country as a theme in his performances.  Besides being one of the greatest young Martial Artists in the world today, Matt also maintains his status as a rising young actor (SAG# 634415), appearing in such films as "The Patriot" with Mel Gibson, "Black Night" with Martin Lawrence and my favorite role to date, "Dennis" (the "obsessed with pancakes kid") in Eli Roth's horror/gore masterpiece, Cabin Fever.  In the American release of the DVD, there is an extra special feature simply titled "Pancakes" in which Matt demonstrates his incredible Martial Arts ability.  For the German release of the movie, they added even more footage of Matt training and performing.  In closing, I would like to thank the entire Helm's family for their love and support, and I hope to see you all soon!
