Imperial
Dragon Martial Arts Academy School Rules
1. Respect: ALWAYS be courteous and helpful, especially
to newer students. Instructor titles are important and are adhered
to for YOUR, not the instructor's benefit. The instructor, regardless
of rank, is called "Sir", "Ma'am" or by their
appropriate title at ALL times
2. Self-control: Temper tantrums and bad attitudes
have no place at this school. Controlling emotional reaction is
a measure of progress and growth. Always show good control
3. Self-Discipline: Never lean on anything. Never chew
gum during class. Never lounge, always keep good posture. Do not
use lazy words such as "yeah", the correct answer would
be "yes sir". Profanity is strictly prohibited. Do not
talk during line-up, workout, or when the instructor is speaking.
4. Honor: Act your age and rank so people will treat
you with the respect you deserve
5. Effort: NEVER settle for less than your best. You
cannot fail if you keep trying.
6. Etiquette: Read, know, and follow the rules
7. Character: Always work what you are weakest at,
not what is easiest
8. Sincerity: Be true to yourself. Train diligently
and with a commitment to self
9. Humility: Never gage yourself against another student's
abilities and NEVER judge another student by comparing rank to
their physical aptitude. Arrogance and jealousy have no place
at this school. If you must judge yourself, do so relative to
time. You should be better now than you were a month ago and not
as good as you'll be a month from now. And if you must judge another
student, do so by examining their stamina in staying with their
goal, a far more enviable talent than the ability to perform physically.
10. Confidence: Our training program is beautiful and
elegant but rarely easy. It is common to feel a sense of self-frustration
especially if we neglect rule nine and compare our progress with
that of others. It is very important that you keep going despite
how difficult the training may seem. Remember that you cannot
fail until you stop trying.
11. Integrity: Make a commitment to your training and
stay with it. Your instructors took your word and your honor to
study this system seriously. So should you!
General Studio and Class Rules:
12. Shoes: Do not arrive or leave barefooted. Store
your street shoes in your tote bag during class and if you have
Martial Arts shoes NEVER wear them outdoors.
13. Cleaning the Dojo: Traditionally, it has always
been the responsibility of Martial Arts students to keep their
workout area maintained and cleaned on a daily basis, therefore
as most classes/lessons are 1 hour in duration the last 10 to
15 minutes will be devoted to helping maintain the cleanliness
of the Kwoon. This is YOUR school, take initiative in keeping
it presentable. If something needs to be picked up, take initiative.
14. Never Slam Doors: Always open and close doors a
quietly as possible. Always knock before entering bathroom.
15. Water: ALWAYS bring a water bottle to class with
you. The instructor will let you know when you can take a water
break
16. Potty Breaks: Try to manage biological functions
around class time.
17. Bow toward the front wall before entering or leaving
the workout area.
18. KNEEL when you or a higher rank is putting on or
taking of rank. Face the front (Buddha) wall when you are putting
on rank. . Face upper ranks when they are putting on rank.
19. Practice good personal hygiene
20. NEVER be late for class
21. ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A NOTEBOOK!!!!! A one-inch
3-ring insert covers binder. Bring it to EVERY class. Lil' Dragons
must also keep a notebook but it may remain at home, but will
be assessed on testing days
22. Keep your training to yourself: Do not demonstrate
your skills for the purpose of showing off. Do not teach your
material to anyone else unless instructed to do so. Discussion
of your training is restricted to your immediate family/household.
Do not
expose your studies to the general public. Take care as to when
and where you display your uniform, sash or gear.
23. Holidays: There are no classes on Presidents Day,
Memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
and New Years
24. *QUESTIONS* Feel free to ask your instructor ANYTHING
about ANYTHING. Your instructor is like a guidance counselor;
you can talk to him/her about anything! This is a true Teacher/Student
relationship.
25. Telephone: You should discuss your concerns before
or after class, but if you prefer to talk by phone, call the Kwoon
and leave a message on the machine. When you call always identify
yourself (don't say "hi it's me", we have a lot of "ME's")
Make sure you include your name, phone number (slowly) and reason
for calling.
26. Testing: Rank tests for yellow and above are tests
of character. Unlike other systems, our tests are not a method
of wearing a color of skill. Our tests are rites of passage. In
order to advance in understanding, the rank test opens the gateway
to the next level of studying the self. A student must be able
to demonstrate inner qualities as well as required material when
subjected to physical and mental stress. Behavior, attitude, and
ability are major factors in determining test eligibility and
subsequent promotion.
27. Support: Your support is critical to the operation
of this studio. We depend on you taking an active role in bringing
in new students. This is relatively easy to do since most people
value a personal recommendation highly.
Safety:
Safety is our highest priority. We do not want you
to get hurt or hurt someone else
28. All males MUST wear groin protection to sparring
class. If you do not have a groin protector we can order one for
you. Students not wearing cups may be dismissed from sparring
class
29. Do not wear jewelry during class (exception for
wedding rings)
30. Sparring: All students above purple belt should
own their own sparring gear, this includes headgear, kicking gear,
groin protection (for males) and gloves. ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS
OF RANK MUST WEAR A MOUTHPIECE WHILE SPARRING. The focus area
for sparring is the torso from the sash to the shoulders. All
sparring must be supervised during an official sparring class.
Unauthorized sparring is grounds for immediate dismissal
Uniform Regulations:
31. A traditional Karate Gi is required. Colored uniforms
are rank privileged and optional. Bring an authorized uniform
to each session. The school patch goes over the heart. NEVER wash
your belt. Treat your, and other's, rank with utmost respect.
Do not drag it, kick it, use it as a bonk toy, or do anything
with it that would be deemed disrespectful to the award it represents.
Remember, you earned the rank but it may be taken away at anytime
for conduct unbecoming
32. If, for whatever reason, you do not have a uniform
to wear in class observe the following guidelines: wear workout
cloths that allow stretching such as sweats or aerobic gear, no
pockets, white or light color, no graphics or lettering.
33. The rank belt goes around twice. Place the center
of the belt just below the belly button and tie a square knot.
34. Yellow belts and above may roll the sleeves of
a Karate Top top IF they do not interfere with the workout. Sleeves
that require attention during class will be rolled down.
35. The left sleeve of the uniform is reserved for
the American flag patch. The patch is applied horizontally with
the top flush against the shoulder hem and the right edge flush
against the press line.
36. Staff Black belts may mix black and white uniform
tops and bottoms.
41. ATP Students may wear ATP Approved Uniforms and
patches
